Making a Difference: Leading in the Local Church

The work of elected leaders is to open a way for God to work through you and the resources available to you in a particular ministry area, for you are about God’s work.

As stewards of the mysteries of God (see 1 Corinthians 4:1), servant leaders are entrusted with the precious and vital task of managing and using God’s gifts in the ongoing work of transformation.

In The United Methodist Church, we envision transformation occurring through a cycle of discipleship. With God’s help and guidance, we

  • reach out and receive people into the body of Christ,
  • help people relate to Christ through their unique gifts and circumstances,
  • nurture and strengthen people in their relationships with God and with others,
  • send transformed people out into the world to lead transformed and transforming lives,
  • continue to reach out, relate, nurture, and send disciples. . .
Elected Leader Committees

The committees are:

  • Church Council– This is the governing body of the church that directs Mission and Vision strategies.
  • Staff Parish Relations– This is the "HR" of the church that commits to helping oversee the staff (evaluations, compensation, benefits, etc.) and the relationship between the church and the pastors.
  • Finance– This seems obvious, but it's not just the money, it's the stewardship of our money and assets and having a long-term outlook on the stewardship of giving. They keep us within our internal checks and balances of procedures and monthly finances, but also oversee our long term understanding of projections, pledges and endowments.
  • Trustees– You may not know this, but all of our buildings and assets actually belong to the Conference, and the Board of Trustees hold it all in "trust" for the Conference. This committee oversees all of our buildings, maintenance, grounds, and assets of the church.  They also oversee the Capital side of our Commit campaign.
  • Lay Leadership– This group helps develop and identify leaders within the church. Each year, they consider who should serve on the other committees.  They should be knowledgeable about the church, it's process and vision as well as members across the congregation.
  • Foundation Trust (Endowment)– They direct the investment activities of our Endowment Funds in accordance with policies and guidelines.
  • Stewardship– As a sub-committee of Finance, the purpose of Stewardship is to nurture generous living for the congregation.
  • Inclusiveness– The purpose of this committee is to be an advocate for an inclusive church. The work aims to create and celebrate a congregation (every ministry, committee, and aspect of the church) that enables full and equal participation of all God’s children.

Letter to Congregation from Pastor Corey

Dear Pasadena Community Church,

This remains an unprecedented and uncertain time. We continue to be the church in the midst of it all. Like always, we depend on strong laity involvement and leadership. To that end, it’s time to start our 2020 Nominations process. This in preparation for electing new leaders at Charge Conference on Oct. 18th.

According to the Book of Discipline that governs how we order the church, there are five official committees that members can be elected by the Charge Conference to serve on to help us order and administer the work of the church. In addition to being on the church’s membership rolls, nominated members should show commitment through regular worship attendance, giving, and serving in or outside the church. Once elected, these leaders will serve for three years.

The committees are:

  • Church Council – This is the governing body of the church that directs Mission and Vision strategies.
  • Staff Parish Relations – This is the "HR" of the church that commits to helping oversee the staff (evaluations, compensation, benefits, etc.) and the relationship between the church and the pastors.
  • Finance – This seems obvious, but it's not just the money, it's the stewardship of our money and assets and having a long-term outlook on the stewardship of giving. They keep us within our internal checks and balances of procedures and monthly finances, but also oversee our long term understanding of projections, pledges, and endowments.
  • Trustees – You may not know this, but all of our buildings and assets actually belong to the Conference, and the Board of Trustees hold it all in "trust" for the Conference. This committee oversees all of our buildings, maintenance, grounds, and assets of the church. They also oversee the Capital side of our Commit campaign.
  • Lay Leadership – This group helps develop and identify leaders within the church. Each year, they consider who should serve on the other committees. They should be knowledgeable about the church, it's process and vision as well as members across the congregation.

Welcoming all to Believe, Belong, Become, and Be the Difference

In addition, we also have the following committees:

  • Foundation Trust (Endowment) – They direct the investment activities of our Endowment Funds in accordance with policies and guidelines.
  • Stewardship – As a sub-committee of Finance, the purpose of Stewardship is to nurture generous living for the congregation.
  • Inclusiveness – The purpose of this committee is to be an advocate for an inclusive church. The work aims to create and celebrate a congregation (every ministry, committee, and aspect of the church) that enables full and equal participation of all God’s children.

Please think of our Mission, Vision, ministry areas & strategies, and those with the gifts of leadership and expertise in one of the committee areas. Also, please know that suggesting someone doesn’t mean they will automatically serve on leadership.

As different people come to mind, please do not contact them yourself. Simply compile a list and send it to Laura Turner (laurat@pccumc.org).

Our Committee on Lay Leadership will meet and begin the process of putting the names through our filters (we check their worship attendance, serving, and giving). Then, we will prayerfully discern who to personally invite to consider being on the slate of nominations for our Charge Conference.

Attached you’ll find a slate of current leaders, including the class of 2020 which will graduate and roll off as of Dec. 31st.

Please be in prayer for this process and the leaders that will be nominated and elected to fulfill these very important roles.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

With Love,

Rev. Corey Jones
Senior Pastor
